Discovering the benefits of the vertical preparation of teeth is a voyage in time where one observes that again and again the more modern teachings are not necessarily closer to the truth.

Vertical preparation is a reminder that we dentists are often taught techniques, many of them counter-intuitive, presented as the peak of our progress, frequently pushed by the industry, only to realise later we used to know better. Failures and frustrations are justified by not properly following the protocol, or just ignored, and old style solutions are under rated and considered outdated.

There are some challenges in embracing this technique and we hope to shed some light in overcoming them. We thought of a course that would make our students understand the ideas behind Vertiprep and be successful at implementing it in the following work day without much effort.

To help us achieve this goal, we are fortunate to have five of the most experienced professionals in the field of vertical preparations: Raul Costa, Miguel Fraga Silva, Hugo Costa Lapa, Luís Afonso, and Luís Oliveira..

The course is led by four outstanding clinicians and one exceptional technician, all with extensive clinical experience. Dr. Raul Costa is an international reference in Operative Dentistry and Dental Aesthetics. His clinical practice, exclusively private in London, focuses on these two disciplines. Dr. Hugo Costa Lapa has vast clinical and teaching experience in Oral Rehabilitation, Fixed Prosthodontics, and Operative Dentistry, which he has been developing exclusively for nearly 20 years at Hospital CUF Descobertas and within the BDP Education group. Dr. Miguel Fraga Silva is a leading expert in Diagnosis, Treatment Planning, and Occlusion. His clinical practice, located in Santarém, is dedicated exclusively to these fields. Dr. Luís Afonso specializes in Operative Dentistry, Fixed Prosthodontics, and Oral Rehabilitation, with advanced knowledge and extensive teaching experience, particularly in the use of digital technologies (scanners) associated with Fixed Prosthodontics. Dr. Luís Oliveira is one of the top Portuguese dental technicians today and is probably the most experienced in working with crowns using the vertical preparation technique. His knowledge and expertise in this field are invaluable for both dentists and prosthetic technicians.
